Parr's Grand Slam in the 11th Gives Bears the Win

June 26, 2012 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Yakima Bears News Release

The Yakima Bears started a three-game road trip to Tri-City with a 7-3, 11-inning win at Gesa Stadium Monday night. Danny Poma's two-run shot tied the game and Josh Parr's grand slam lifted the Bears to victory.

Home runs were the story for both squads, accounting for nine of the 10 runs scored between the two teams. Bears starting pitcher Blake Perry gave up a three-run blast that put the Bears behind for most of the game. After Perry gave up the three runs on five hits in the first, the starter settled down, tossing three shutout innings before the Bears went to the bullpen.

The bullpen picked up right where Perry left off. Jose Jose pitched a scoreless fifth inning and Enrique Burgos tossed two shutout frames behind him. Victor Capellan came through with three scoreless innings, including a dramatic tenth inning after giving up a lead-off double. Capellan earned the win and RJ Hively came in and threw a 1-2-3 eleventh inning to seal the victory.

In the fifth inning the Bears got on the scoreboard with a two-single by Kevin Medrano that scored Poma. Poma came through again in the seventh inning with a two-run homer that tied the game at 3-3. The tie wasn't broken until the eleventh, as Parr pounded a home run after Poma and Mark Ginther had reached on singles and Medrano got on with a walk.

The home run for Parr was his second of the season and came after he'd started the night 0-for-4. As a team, the Bears finished with a season-high 12 hits. Ginther had four of those hits, with a double mixed in with three singles. Poma finished with a 3-for-5 night.

Yakima moved above .500 for the first time this season with the win, as the first-place Bears are now 6-5. Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for 7:15 Tuesday night at Gesa Stadium. Right-handed pitchers Bobby O'Neill of the Bears and Josh Slaats of the Dust Devils are expected to start on the mound.
