Victoria Royals News Release
Victoria, BC - In a Tuesday night clash at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, the Victoria Royals squared off against the Moose Jaw Warriors. The Royals started Patrik Polivka in net, while the Warriors sent Daniel Wapple between the pipes.
Brandon Magee opened the scoring for Victoria seven minutes into the game while the two clubs played four-on-four hockey. Magee led the rush down the ice before he made a toe-drag move on a Moose Jaw defender and snapped the puck over Wapple's glove. The goal would hold up as the lone marker of the period to send the Royals into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead.
Victoria extended their lead at 1:20 of the middle frame when Alex Gogolev netted his 11th goal of the season while on a four-on-three powerplay. Jamie Crooks fed Gogolev a pass from the high slot to the right face-off dot before the Russian forward one-timed the puck high to the short side of Wapple. The Royals and Warriors exchanged powerplay opportunities, but neither team could find another goal and Victoria took a 2-0 lead into the third frame.
Travis Brown put Moose Jaw on the scoreboard at 10:27 of the third period as he cut Victoria's lead in half. Brown jumped off the right point and buried a cross-ice pass from Miles Wakentin past an out-stretched Polivka. Tim Traber later restored the two-goal lead as he picked up his first of the season. The Royals' forward won a footrace through the neutral zone to a loose puck before he fought off a Warrior's defenceman to break in alone. Traber made a move from his backhand to his forehand and slid the puck between Wapple's legs to send Victoria ahead 3-1 at the 13:14 mark. Moose Jaw responded three minutes later when Justin Kirsch's pointshot found its way past Polivka and the crowd in front on the powerplay. The Warriors then evened the score after they had pulled Wapple for an extra attacker and Braydon Point netted his seventh of the season at 18:56. Morgan Reilly caused a turnover before he slid the puck to Point who fired a snapshot off the crossbar and in to tie the game. The teams could not solve the game in the remaining minute and overtime was needed.
An extra five minutes of play did not determine a winner, and the two clubs headed to a shootout. Logan Nelson scored as the Royals' first shooter, but a pair of Moose Jaw shootout markers from Kirsch and Jordan Messier gave the Warriors the road victory. Warriors 4 Royals 3 in a shootout.
Victoria went 1/4 25.0% on the power play, while Moose Jaw was also 1/4 25.0%. The Warriors outshot the Royals 37-22.
The Royals will now travel to Prince George for a pair of games against the Cougars on Friday, November 30th and Saturday, December 1st. Victoria will then return home to Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Wednesday, December 5th to face B.C. Division rivals the Vancouver Giants. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m.
