Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has signed forward Chris Stevens. Last season, Stevens (5'10/200) (22), who hails from Dawson Creek, British Columbia, scored nineteen goals and assisted on twenty-three others (forty-two points) in fifty-four ECHL games, forty-seven of which were with the Royals. Stevens, who will be entering his third year of pro hockey, began last season with the Phoenix Roadrunners where he played seven games (0g-1a=1pt, 12 pims) before being traded to the Royals on December 4, 2008, in a four-player deal that brought Stevens, forward Peder Skinner, and defenseman Brett Thurston to the Royals in exchange for the rights to defenseman Kevin Schaeffer and future considerations. Stevens had an immediate impact with the Royals scoring a pair of goals in his second game with the team against the Florida Everblades on December 6. Over the course of his time with Reading (19g-22a=41pts, 42 pims in 47 games), Stevens racked up sixteen multi-point performances, which included four separate multi-goal games. In addition to his offense, Stevens was known for an aggressive and physical style of play-particularly on the fore-check-which earned him the admiration and respect of Royals' fans and, ultimately, the team's Heart Award at the Fans' Choice Awards banquet. Prior to turning pro, Stevens, who tied for the team lead in Reading with three game-winning goals, played two full seasons with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League. In his first season with Medicine Hat, Stevens was the leading rookie scorer for the team. Stevens followed that up in his second year with the Tigers with a team-leading thirty-two goals. That 2006-07 Medicine Hat team advanced to Canadian major junior hockey's prestigious Memorial Cup Tournament by winning the playoff championship in the WHL. The Royals open the 2009-10 ECHL season on Thursday, October 15, 2009 (7:05 pm) when the Kalamazoo Wings make their first visit ever to the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pennsylvania. Season tickets for the Royals' 2009-10 season are currently available. To become a part of Royals hockey, call 610-898-PUCK or log onto www.royalshockey.com.
