Royals Shut Down Mariners to Take Series Finale

Pulaski, VA- Matt Murray earned his second win as the Royals one-hit the Pulaski Mariners to take the series. Burlington took the series finale, 5-0, with three of the five runs being unearned. Mayckol Guaipe takes the loss, dropping his record to 3-4. After an off day on Tuesday, these two teams will open a series at Burlington Athletic Stadium.

In the top of the first inning, Burlington struck. Lane Adams led off the game by reaching on an error, and was moved up to third on a single from Justin Trapp. Two batters later, Murray Watts would ground out, scoring Adams from third, and giving the Royals a 1-0 edge.

In the fifth inning, errors would again bite the Mariners, as the first batter, Jin-Ho Shin, reached on a mishap by third baseman Dillon Hazlett. Adrian Bringas would double to advance Shin to third, where he would score on a single from Steven Brooks. Through five innings, Burlington held a 2-0 lead.

In the Royals' next at bat they were able to increase the spread. To open the sixth, Michael Antonio reached on an error, and then advanced to second on an arid pick off throw from pitcher Jeremy Dobbs with Murray Watts at the plate. Watts would walk, and Jorge Bonifacio would groundout, putting Antonio on third and moving Watts up to second. A wild pitch from Dobbs scored Antonio and moved Watts to third. Shin singled up the middle to score Watts and give Burlington a four run lead.

In the next inning, The Royals would add some insurance. Adams would walk to lead off the inning, before moving up to second on a wild pitch, and then stole third base. He would watch the next two batters record outs before Watts singled home Adams to put Burlington up 5-0.

Bringas was the only Royal to record more than one hit, going 2-for-4 with two doubles. Though he scored two runs, Adams was 0-for-3, and walked twice. Watts had a 1-for-4 outing, with two RBI's and a run scored. Six Royals recorded hits, for a game total of seven, and as a team, went 3-for-16 with runners in scoring position.

Daniel Paulini was the only Mariner to record a hit, and one of three to reach base; Frankie Christian and Hassiel Jimenez both walked.

Murray went six and two third innings, allowing just one hit, while striking out nine, a career high. Malcom Culver tossed the final two and a third, surrendering two walks, no hits, and fanning four.

For Pulaski, Guaipe pitched five innings, allowing two unearned runs, and three hits, with six strikeouts. Jeremy Dobbs and Benjamin Cornwell each allowed an earned run on two hits, with Dobbs allowing two runs overall. Leonardo Rodriguez walked two and struck out three in his two innings of work.

Both teams are off on Tuesday before squaring off at Burlington Athletic Stadium on Wednesday. The Royals have shutout their opponents twice, both coming against the Mariners. Tickets for Wednesday are available by calling (336) 222-0223.
