Pulaski Mariners News Release
Pulaski VA (August 1, 2011) - It was a sloppy game defensively for the Mariners Monday night, as they took on the Burlington Royals for the final game of their three game home stand. The Royals pitching staff was spot on all night, shutting out the Mariners 5-0.
Lane Adams, lead-off batter for the Royals, lead started the game off reaching on a fielding error. He would advance to third on a single by Justin Trapp, and later score on a groundout by Murray Watts to give the Royals the early lead 1-0.
Matt Murray started the game on the hill for the Royals. The Mariners had no answer for him, as Murray picked apart the Mariners offense over his six and two thirds innings of work. He allowed no runs, one hit, and struck out nine.
Errors were the headline for the Mariners, who committed four throughout the game. Of the five runs scored for Burlington, only two were earned. The Mariners best chance to put some pressure on the Royals came in the sixth inning when they loaded the bases. Unfortunately, they weren't able to convert on the opportunity.
Malcom Culver entered the game in relief of Matt Murray for the final out of the seventh inning and finished the game right where Murray left off. Culver allowed no hits over his two and one third innings of work, and the Royals cruised to the win 5-0. Daniel Paolini knocked the lone hit for the Mariners, with a single in the first inning.
Matt Murray (2-2), who at one point struck out five batters in a row, earned the win for the Royals, while Mayckol Guaipe (3-4) was tagged with the loss.
The next home game for the Mariners will be August 6, 2011 with a three game series against the Elizabethton Twins. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
