Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals of the ECHL, affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League and the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, today announced that the team has acquired the rights to defenseman Scott Basiuk ("BASS-ick") and center Kris Kasper ("KASS-puhr") from the Utah Grizzlies, completing the future considerations provision in a trade that sent forward Ryan Kinasewich to Utah last November.

Basiuk, a twenty-six year old third year pro from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, was selected to represent the Bakersfield Condors at the ECHL All-Star game in Frenso this past season. The 6'2"/205 pound defenseman was subsequently traded to the Columbia Inferno, who in turn transferred his rights to Utah, where he played the final 23 games of the regular season, as well as four playoff games. Over the course of the year, Basiuk scored four goals, assisted on 26 others, and picked up 93 penalty minutes in 64 regular season games. Basiuk had a stellar four year college career at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he served as a co-captain in his junior and senior seasons. A three-year Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Academic Team member, Basiuk was chosen as a member of the Second Team All-ECAC squad, as well as an Inside College Hockey Second Team All-American, in his senior season. Kasper, a third year pro from Gibbons, Alberta, played thirty-three games with the Grizzlies last season, scoring three goals and adding four assists and picking up 80 penalty minutes. Kasper also scored a goal in one of the two playoff games he played for the Grizzlies this year. In his rookie year with the Peoria Rivermen (then in the ECHL), Kasper racked up seventeen points and 201 penalty minutes in 51 games. As a junior, Kasper was a member of the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, who won the prestigious Royal Bank Cup Championship as the Junior A Canadian National Champions in 2003.
