SURPRISE, AZ - The Omaha Royals opened their 14-game Cactus League schedule Thursday, dropping their Spring Training opener 7-2 to the Oklahoma RedHawks in Surprise, Arizona.
Oklahoma broke a scoreless tie by plating four runs in the bottom of the second inning off Royals starter Matt Wright. The big right-hander gave up four runs on six hits in one and two-thirds innings of work. Wright, who turned 25 years old earlier this week, was signed by Kansas City last October as a minor league free agent, after spending the first seven seasons of his professional career in the Atlanta Braves organization.
Veteran lefty Eddie Yarnall, who was 2-3 with a 3.19 ERA and one save with Omaha last season, followed Wright to the mound. He allowed two runs on four hits over two innings, but struck out five batters, walking none.
Royals utility player Richard Lewis went 2-for-3 at the plate, sparking a two-run sixth inning by stroking a leadoff triple. Lewis, who was named the 2004 Southern League MVP, was selected by Kansas City in the Minor League Phase of the Rule 5 draft from the Chicago Cubs organization last December.
Omaha hosts the Portland Beavers, Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, on Friday afternoon in Surprise.
The Royals open their 2007 Pacific Coast League season on Thursday, April 5th at Albuquerque, with the home opener at Rosenblatt Stadium slated for Friday, April 13th at 7:05 p.m., also vs. the Isotopes.
