Victoria Royals News Release
Everett, WA - In a Wednesday night matchup at the Comcast Arena, the Victoria Royals faced off against the Everett Silvertips in a game with heavy playoff implications. In net for the Royals was Jared Rathjen while Everett gave the nod to Kent Simpson.
The opening frame saw Victoria carry much of the play while outshooting the Silvertips 11 to five. The Royals' best chance of the period came off the stick of Steven Hodges who fired a one-timer from the side of the net but was turned aside by the left pad of Simpson. After 20 minutes the game remained 0-0.
Victoria opened the game's scoring on the powerplay at the 7:12 of the second period with Robin Soudek's 26th goal of the season. The goal came on a three-on-two rush when Hayden Rintoul wired a slap shot from the high slot that eluded the control of Simpson. Soudek picked up the loose puck at the side of the net and slid it into the empty cage. The Silvertips would notch the equalizer late in the period after Josh Winquist corralled a pass from Ryan Murray and ripped a low stick-side shot that beat Rathjen from the top of the left circle. Through two periods of play the score stood 1-1.
Everett took the lead 2:47 into the final frame when Zach McPhee dished a pass from behind the Royals' net to Manraj Hayer, who stood alone in front and shoveled the puck under the glove of the sprawling Victoria netminder. The Silvertips then made it 3-1 on a two-on-one rush late in the period on a hard wrist shot by Ryan Harrison that beat Rathjen under the glove hand. With just under two minutes to play, the Royals drew within one after Ben Walker set up Soudek in the low slot and quickly one-timed a hard shot between the legs of Simpson. The Royals looked to tie the game late in the period but were unable to find the equalizer. Silvertips 3 Royals 2.
Victoria went 1/2 50.0% on the power play, while Everett was 0/1 0.00%. The Royals outshot the Silvertips 37-13.
Victoria continues its road swing with a visit to the Kelowna Rockets on Friday, March 9th, with puck drop scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Victoria's next home game is Wednesday, March 14th when they welcome the Portland Winterhawks.
