Victoria Royals News Release
Victoria, BC - In a Wednesday evening contest at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, the Victoria Royals squared off against their B.C. Division rivals, the Vancouver Giants. The Royals started Patrik Polivka in net, while the Giants gave the nod to Payton Lee.
Vancouver opened the scoring at 17:01 of the first period on a marker from Cain Franson. The Giants' forward centered a pass to the slot before it bounced off of a Royals' defender and past Polivka. Vancouver extended their lead at 19:52 just after a Victoria penalty had expired. Jackson Houck tipped Wes Vannieuwenhuizen's point shot past the Royals' netminder to give the Giants a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.
The Giants added their third of the night less than one minute into the middle frame. Kale Kessy redirected Carter Popoff's shot from the left circle past Polivka's stick side to extend the Giants' lead to 3-0. Coleman Vollrath was then called upon to replace Polivka in the Royals' net. Victoria netted a powerplay goal at 12:35 courtesy of Steven Hodges' seventh of the season. Hodges released a shot from the right circle that deflected off of a Giants' defender and into the Vancouver net. The Giants restored their three-goal lead at the 15:00 minute mark when Riley Kieser sped down the left wing and fired a shot stickside on Vollrath. Logan Nelson responded for the Royals and extended his point streak to 10 games at the 18:35 mark. Nelson cut the Giants' lead in half when he jumped on a loose puck in the crease and put it past Lee. After two periods of play, Vancouver held a 4-2 lead.
The Giants added two more goals at the 6:27 and 7:04 marks of the final frame. Vancouver forwards Brett Kulak and Franson each added one to extend the lead to 6-2. The Giants then netted a powerplay goal before the buzzer from Popoff to cap off Vancouver's victory. Giants 7 Royals 2.
Victoria went 1/5 20.0% on the power play, while Vancouver was 1/2 50.0%. The Royals outshot the Giants 33-28.
The Royals now look ahead to the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday, December 8th for the annual Teddy Bear Toss Night. Fans are encouraged to bring their new or gently-used stuffed animals and throw them on the ice following the Royals' first goal.
