DANVILLE, Va. - The Danville Braves bats set off some fireworks of their own Tuesday night as the D-Braves exploded for four runs in the sixth inning to win the rubber match game and take the series from the Burlington Royals 7-1 in front of a sellout crowd 2,963 fans on a Fourth of July Fireworks Night at American Legion Post 325 Field.
In their first hacks, shortstop Ronald Luna reached base on a ball that clipped the lip of the infield grass, which his counterpart, Humberto Arteaga, couldn't field cleanly. Luna then advanced all the way to third on first baseman Casey Kalenkosky's single. After Royals starter Yender Caramo began to settle in and strike out back-to-back batters, left fielder Edison Sanchez cracked a two-out RBI single to open the scoring, 1-0.
Left fielder Terrance Gore yanked a triple down the left field line to lead off the top of the sixth and give the Royals their fourth hit of the ball game. Gore then scored on an RBI groundout by Arteaga to tie the game at one.
Working out of the stretch for the first time in four innings, Caramo and the Royals unraveled in the sixth. Third baseman Carlos Franco hit a two out single and catcher Josh Elander cranked a two run home run out of the park to put the Braves out in front, 3-1. Sanchez then reached first on an errant throw by Royals third baseman Patrick Leonard. Center fielder Blake Brown kept the two out rally alive and singled Sanchez to third. Right fielder Felix Marte then extended his hit streak to seven games with a two-run double, which capped the Braves four run sixth.
The Braves padded their lead in the seventh. Luna laced a ground ball single through the hole and Kalenkosky went yard to give the Braves their second two run home run of the game. Sanchez iced the game 8-1 in the eighth with his second home run in as many games.
Braves starter Ernesto Silva dazzled and at one point retired 13 Royals in a row. Silva (2-1) pitched seven innings and allowed one run (earned) on six hits to qualify for the win. Caramo (1-1) pitched six innings and allowed five runs (two earned) on eight hits to suffer the loss. Alexander Wilson pitched two innings of scoreless relief to close out the game.
