Greeneville Astros News Release
Kingsport, TN - The Greeneville Astros made a good effort at a rally, but ultimately came up just short against the Kingsport Mets on Monday night with the tying run at third base in a 5-4 game. The Astros (9-5) have now fallen back into a tie with the Elizabethton Twins for first place in the division.
Greeneville took the initial lead on Monday with an Angel Ibanez single to score D'Andre Toney in the top of the first inning. However, the lead did not last long.
The Mets, in the bottom of the inning, came right back. With one out, Kingsport loaded the bases with a walk and two singles. Then, Jeffrey Diehl hit a base-clearing triple which was immediately followed by a RBI single from Joe Tuschak. That put the Mets up 4-1 early.
Two innings later, Greeneville inched a little closer. They loaded the bases in the third inning with a single and two walks. Then, they scored two runs when Michael Martinez and Marc Wik each drew walks with the bases loaded. That left Greeneville down 4-3.
After the next three innings went scoreless, Kingsport came back in the seventh and got a sacrifice fly from Maikis De La Cruz to bring Branden Kaupe home. With the score now 5-3, it came down to Greeneville's final three outs.
Michael Martinez started the ninth inning off with a single. Then, Ariel Ovando hit his league-leading seventh double of the year to move Martinez over to third. With Ricky Gingras batting, there was a passed ball that allowed Martinez to score and move Ovando, the tying run, over to third. However, the Astros were not able to complete the rally as Kingsport held on to their 5-4 lead.
Kingsport reliever Corey Oswalt (1-0) earned his first win after giving up no runs, no hits, and picking up two strikeouts over four innings of work. Luis Rengel, meanwhile, pitched two innings, gave up one run on two hits and got his first save.
Greeneville and Kingsport will conclude their three-game series on Tuesday night. For more information on the Greeneville Astros, please visit www.greenevilleastros.com or call (423) 638-0411.
