St. Cloud Rox News Release
St. Cloud, MN - St. Cloud (17-3) took down Eau Claire (13-8) in their first match-up of the season, 6-3, to win its sixth consecutive game and still hold the best record in the Great Plains.
The Rox bats slowly, but surely, put runs on the board all night long. Dawson Martin (Nevada) started the scoring for St. Cloud in the second inning with an RBI double to right-center. Martin finished the day with two hits, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base.
Will Worthington (San Diego) also had a strong day at the plate in his first game playing at the Rock Pile. Worthington had two crucial RBI singles, including one late in the game to add more insurance to the Rox lead.
The Rox got another solid start out of Joe Battaglia (Southern) on the mound. He went five innings, giving up just two runs, and earned his second win of the summer. Joe Brandon (Georgia State) followed him out of the bullpen with two shutout innings of his own.
In the ninth, Chase Grillo (Washington State) came out for the second straight night and earned his Northwoods League-leading seventh save of the summer. Grillo struck out two before inducing a game-ending groundout.
St. Cloud finishes its two-game series against the Express on Wednesday night from the Rock Pile, looking for a third consecutive sweep. First pitch from Joe Faber Field is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
