Brockton Rox News Release
Atlantic City, NJ (July 19, 2007) -- LHP Bryan Morse allowed just one run on two hits over six innings in his Rox debut and RF Tony Gonzalez hit two homers and drove in three as Brockton topped the Atlantic City Surf 8-3 at Bernie Robbins Stadium in Atlantic City, NJ. 2B Alex Nunez also had a three-run longball in the win for the Rox. The Rox and Surf split the four-game series, and the back-to- back wins for the Rox are the first since the end of June and the first against an opponent other than New Haven County in 2007. The Rox are 22-28 overall and 2-2 in the second half.
The Rox wasted no time against Surf starter RHP Coogie Friedman. LF Jeremy Coronado led off with a single in the first, and advanced to third on a Nunez double. With one out, C Jason Radwan hit a bloop single to left that fell for a hit, scoring Coronado and giving the Rox a 1-0 lead. The Rox scored first in each of the four games of the series. With a 1-0 lead, Morse cruised through the first, and let his offense really take over in the second. Gonzalez led off the second with a double, and after a sacrifice, scored on an RBI single by SS Fredy De La Cruz. Later in the frame with two on and two out, Nunez crushed a three-run homer in to the right field corner to put the Rox up 5-0. The Surf struck for a run against Morse in the bottom of the second.
In the third inning, Gonzalez hit a solo homer over the left field wall to give the Rox a 6-1 lead. Atlantic City reliever and Stoughton, MA native RHP Kevin Brower did not allow a run in four innings of work. Morse departed the game after the sixth. He allowed just four baserunners, two hits and two walks, and struck out six in his Rox debut. RHP Ari Kafka took over and allowed two runs in the seventh and left two runners on base with one out. RHP Kyle George cleaned up the mess by getting Surf CF Lucas Taylor to bounce into a double play.
In the ninth against his former teammate LHP Donavon Hendricks, Gonzalez hit the second of his two round-trippers, a two-run blast to give the Rox an 8-3 lead. George wrapped up the final 2.1 innings for the save. 1B Francisco Lebron, Coronado, and Gonzalez all had three-hit games for the Rox in the win.
Friday at Campanelli Stadium, the Rox face the first-half champion New Jersey Jackals at 7:05 PM. RHP John Kelly (4-2, 1.97 ERA) starts for Brockton.
