New Haven County Cutters News Release

August 23, 2005 - The New Haven County Cutters (22-12) scored 10 times in the bottom of the fifth inning, turning a close game into a 11-2 rout of the visiting Brockton Rox (22-10).

Four walks, an error, and five hits sparked the Cutters' explosion against three Rox pitchers. Corner infielders Keith Stegbauer and Bill Peavey struck the biggest blows, with third baseman Stegbauer crushing a bases-loaded triple and first baseman Peavey climaxing the rally with a three-run home run off the rightfield foul pole.

For four-and-a-half frames, the battle of Canadian-American League division leaders lived up to expectations.

Brockton compiled an early two-run lead with solo tallies in the third and fourth. In the third, Eddie Gerald's soft line drive eluded pitcher Edwin Minaya's glove on its way to centerfield, driving in Eugene Julien. The next inning, Brad Rosenblat walked with one out and came home on Brian Jones' double.

The Cutters halved the lead in the fourth, thanks to three base hits, two of them on bunts. The second came from lead-off man Keto Anderson, dragging a two-out roller that got under Rox second baseman Andrew Salvo, scoring Andy Larned and sending runners to second and third.

Brockton starter Craig Anderson escaped from that jam, but he could not escape the fifth.

With one out and runners on second and third, manager Ed Nottle ordered Orlando Encarnacion intentionally walked. Larned then worked a walk of his own to tie the score at 2 and Stegbauer followed with a double to the gap for a three-run lead and knock out the Australian southpaw.

Anderson's replacement, Manny Tejada, fared worse. A wild pitch scored Stegbauer, two straight walks put runners at first and second, and Chas Terni followed with a run-scoring single for a 7-2 lead. A comebacker off Derrick Gibson's bat looked certain to be the second out of the inning, but Tejada threw wildly to first, bringing home the Cutters' eighth run.

Out went Tejada, in came Brockton pitching coach Shad Williams, activated earlier in the day. Williams' second pitch was promptly sent flying high off the rightfield foul pole by Peavey, and just like that New Haven County led 11-2.

The Cutters' first baseman reached base four times in five plate appearances, extending his league-record streak for consecutive games reaching base to 49.

Rox starter Anderson (4-2) suffered the loss, surrendering 10 hits and six runs in 4.1 innings. His opposite number Minaya (2-0) lasted seven innings, giving up nine hits and two runs.

Brockton and New Haven County play the second game of their three-game set on Wednesday at 7:05. Righthander Brad Guy (0-2, 3.03) makes his return to the rotation for the Rox against Jarrett Stawarz (7-6, 4.26) of the Cutters.
