August 23, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release
ELMIRA 9, GRAYS 8 @ Elmira, N.Y. Time: 3:13 ATT: 919 W: Mike Howell (6-8) L: Jodie Kennedy (3-8) S: None HR: None Down 6-0 after three innings, the Grays battled back to within two runs only to see the Pioneers take a 9-4 lead late in the game. Undeterred, the Can-Am's road team pulled to within one run before succumbing to closer Claudio Galva in the ninth. DH C Peterson led the way for the Grays, going 3-for-5 with three driven in and two runs scored while 2B Joe Jiannetti and LB Mark Burke both hit twice and scored twice. SS Das Jesson had two hits for the Pioneers, scoring two runs and collecting a pair of RBIs. Mike Howell got the win for Elmira, giving up four runs, one earned, on five hits in seven innings. Jodie Kennedy took the loss after surrendering eight runs, five earned, and eight hits in his five innings of work. The teams committed four errors apiece in the ballgame, leading to a combined nine unearned runs on the night. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW HAVEN COUNTY 11, BROCKTON 2 @ West Haven, Conn. Time: 3:11 ATT: 1,161 W: Edwin Minaya (2-0) L: Craig Anderson (4-2) S: None HR: NHC - Bill Peavey (14) Trailing 2-1 halfway through the game, the Cutters put up ten runs in the bottom half of the fifth to roll over Brockton. New Haven sent 13 men to the plate in the inning, saw all nine members of the lineup come around to score and forced the Rox to change pitchers twice. The big blows came from 3B Keith Stegbauer, who tripled with the bases loaded early in the inning, and 1B Bill Peavey, who hit a three-run shot to wrap up the scoring. The nine-run lead was plenty for starter Edwin Minaya, who collected his second win on the strength of seven innings, during which he allowed nine hits and walked five, but gave up just two runs, one earned. New Haven's LF Derrick Gibson had three doubles and scored a run, while DH Kris Zacuto was 3-for-4 for the Rox, who left twelve men on base on the night. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- WORCESTER 10, QUEBEC 4 @ Worcester, Mass. Time: 2:44 ATT: 2,842 W: Mike Cox (4-4) L: Julien Tucker (6-5) S: Chris Shank (2) HR: WOR - Josh Beauregard 2 (8), Chris Colabello (5) The Tornadoes tied the score at four in the fifth inning on RBI singles by LF Josh Beauregard and RF Andy Brown and didn't look back. Beauregard seemed to do most of the damage for Worcester, going 4-for-5 with a double, two home runs, five RBIs and four runs scored. He didn't leave much for the rest of the offense, but Brown managed a pair of hits and drove in two himself. Quebec's Julien Tucker allowed eight runs on seven hits and walked five in six innings to take the loss, while Mike Cox was credited with the win after giving up seven hits in six innings and holding Quebec to four runs despite walking eight men. Chris Shank picked up the save, going the final three innings and allowing only one hit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW JERSEY 5, NORTH SHORE 4 @ Lynn, Mass. Time: 2:40 ATT: 2,165 W: Josh Brey (8-6) L: Bryan Morse (2-3) S: None HR: NS - Brian Macchi (7), Josh Tranum (1) It looked to be a pitchers' duel through four, as Jackal Josh Brey and the Spirit's Bryan Morse combined to allow just three hits in the early going. North Shore struck first on a solo home run by RF Brian Macchi to lead off the fifth. New Jersey answered in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs thanks to RBI singles by 2B Benji Gil and LF Steven Checksfield and picked up another trio in the seventh when 3B Elvis Corporan's double cleared the loaded bases. The Spirit rallied in the ninth when DH Josh Tranum hit a two-out, three run homer to bring North Shore within one. Brey was able to finish what he started, though, getting SS Cleatus Davidson to fly out to left to end the game, picking up the win after allowing four runs on seven hits in nine complete innings.
