New Haven County Cutters News Release
In the battle between Can-Am League division leaders, the Brockton Rox in the North and the New Haven County Cutters in the South, it was the home team that landed the first blow, registering an 11-2 victory on Tuesday night at Yale Field.
The Cutters only scored in two innings, but one of them was memorable: a 10-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth. New Haven County sent 13 batters to the plate and every batter in the lineup came around to score in the inning.
The two biggest hits of the frame came from one unlikely source and one proven run producer. Filling in for the injured Junior Zamora at third base, Keith Stegbauer ripped a 3-run triple into the right centerfield gap off of the Rox?s starter Craig Anderson. It would be the last batter of the night for Anderson. His replacement, Manny Tejada, did not fair any better and was unable to register an out. Newly activated Shad Williams, Brockton's pitching coach, came into the game and was greeted unceremoniously by Bill Peavey, who drove a high fly ball that cleared Yale Field's short porch, driving in three runs. It was his 14th round tripper of the year.
Derrick Gibson ripped three doubles in his first three at bats, tying the league record for two-baggers in a single game. He scorched a line drive right at left fielder Matt Cucurullo in his final at bat. Had the ball been 15 feet in either direction of Cucurullo, the record would have been broken.
Making his first start for the Cutters, Edwin Minaya only had the luxury of pitching with a big lead for a couple of innings. He battled through the first five innings, allowing just one earned run and showing a penchant for escaping tricky situations with minimum damage. Three separate rallies were ended with double plays induced by the Cutters starter.
Adam Nikolic pitched two innings of scoreless relief to wrap up the game.
The second game of the series is on Wednesday night at 7:05. The Cutters send Jarrett Stawarz (7-6) to the mound. He will square off against the Rox's Brad Guy (0-2). Thursday, the series finale, is Red Sox/Yankees Rivalry Night and will feature longtime Boston hurler Dennis ?Oil Can? Boyd (3-3) pitching for the Rox. Tim Keinath (3-6), who has no Yankees or Red Sox ties, will toss for the Cutters.
