Brockton Rox News Release
The Brockton Rox (13-9) won their fifth straight game on Friday night when they defeated the New Haven County Cutters (5-17) by a score of 6-5 at Yale Field.
The Rox took the lead in the top of the first inning. Saul Bustos singled and Criag Lewis doubled, setting up a two out base hit for Brian Jones scoring both Bustos and Lewis to put the Rox up, 2-0. By reaching base in his ninteenth straight game, Lewis tied the Brockton Rox club record for consecutive games reaching base.
The Cutters were able to score on Rox starter Marcos Castillo, early and often. New Haven scored two runs in the bottom of the first when Derek Gibson drove home Keto Anderson and Darren Ciraco, tying the game 2-2. In the bottom of the second two more runs scored for New Haven, putting the Cutters up 4-2. In the fifth inning, Marcos Castillo came out of the game after Jeff Brooks singled in Derek Gibson to make it 5-2 Cutters.
Jon Koch relieved Marcos Castillo and threw four shutout innings of two-hit baseball. Koch's ability to shutdown the Cutters opened the door for a Rox rally.
In the seventh Brian Jones doubled and scored on Guye Senjem's single to slice into the Cutters lead, and make it 5-3.
In the top of the ninth, Lewis led off with a double and scored on a single by Brian Jones making it 5-4. After Guye Senjem singled and Kris Zacuto reached on a fielders choice, Hector Henriquez hit a two-out dribbler down the third base line. Cutters third baseman Jeff Brooks threw the ball away allowing the Rox to score two runs and take a 6-5 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Joey Cole shut the door to pick up his fourth save of the season. Koch (1-0) picked up his first win. Nick Rowland (2-2) was charged with the loss.
The teams will meet again on Saturday Night at Yale Field. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
