Rox roll over Spirit in series finale

July 16, 2006 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release

After scoring just three runs total in the first two games of the series, the Brockton Rox exploded for 12 hits in a 10-5 victory that prevented the Spirit from sweeping the three-game series at Fraser Field.

Brockton broke this game open early with a four-run second inning. Jason Radwan reached on a fielders' choice, when Spirit second baseman Blake Whealy failed to turn a double play. He moved to third on a single from Mike Torres and came around to score on an RBI base hit from Eugene Julien. With two on and just one out, Scott William's came through with the big of the inning, launching a three-run home run over the left field wall to put the Rox ahead, 4-0.

The Rox did more damage with the long ball during the next inning, but this time it was Guye Senjem supplying the power. Mike Scanzano drew a walk to get things started and Senjem sent a towering shot over the right-field wall to give the Rox a six-run advantage after three innings of play.

The Rox continued the offensive onslaught in the fourth inning, tacking on three more runs. With two out in the inning and the bases empty, back-to-back walks chased Spirit starter Jared Trout from the game. Shaun McNamara took over on the mound in his Spirit debut, but unfortunately he didn't fare much better. He hit the first batter he faced to load the bases, and then gave up a two-run single to Senjem, and then balked home the third Rox run of the inning.

Trailing 9-0 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Luis Sabino finally put the Spirit on the scoreboard with a two-run double to left center that scored Bethel and Garrett Weir.

The Rox got one back, however, in the top of the eighth inning on scoring their 10th run of the ballgame on an RBI single up the middle off the bat of Julien.

J.D. Reininger tried to pull the Spirit back into this contest, jacking a three-run home run over the right field wall in the home half of the eighth. The long ball was Reininger's second of the series, but it wasn't enough as the Spirit couldn't push another run across the plate.

Former Spirit ace John Kelly emerged triumphant in his first game back at Fraser Field, picking up his sixth victory of the season (6-2). Trout suffered the loss for the Spirit, dropping his record to .500 (2-2) for the year.

The Spirit are off for the All-Star break for the next three days. Brooks, Chris Rowan, Andrew Wishy, Bryan Morse and Ryan Bicondoa will all be park of the CanAm League competing against the American Association All-Stars in El Paso. The entire Spirit squad will return to action on Thursday in New Jersey.
