Brockton, Mass. - 2B Derek Kinzler's eighth-inning bases-clearing triple was the difference as the Brockton Rox erased a 7-0 deficit en route to a 9-8 victory over the Worcester Tornadoes in a Can-Am League exhibition contest at Campanelli Stadium on Friday evening.

The Tornadoes jumped out in front in the fourth inning, 3-0, on DH Brent Metheny's three-run blast off of Brockton reliever Buster Lussier. Worcester then tacked on another four runs in a fifth inning that included a two-run blast from 2B Mark Minicozzi.

The Rox started their comeback with a run in the fifth and another four in the sixth, courtesy of home runs from RF Keith Brachold and PH Chris Valencia, making it a 7-5 game. Brockton then took the lead for good in the eighth; after DH Clyde Williams, Valencia and 3B Phillip Cuadrado were walked to load the bases, Kinzler hit a three-run triple, then went home on an errant throw by Tornadoes RF Courtney Billingslea to give the Rox the 9-8 advantage.

Mike Smith had a solid start for the Rox, going three innings and allowing no runs on two hits, striking out four. Lussier, Colin Lynch, Brad Hertzler and Josh Papelbon also saw action out of the bullpen for the Rox.

On offense, Brachold, LF Melvin Falu and C Chris Grossman each had two hits for Brockton.

The Rox exhibition season continues on Saturday with the first of two games against the Quebec Capitales in Old Orchard Beach, Maine at 6:30 p.m. Wayne Lundgren will be on the mound for Brockton, facing Quebec's Michel Simard.
