Brockton Rox News Release

Brockton, Mass. - SS Dominic Ramos' 3-for-5 night moved him into fourth all-time with 303 career hits as a member of the Rox, but the New Jersey Jackals rallied late for a 9-6 victory in eleven innings in a Can-Am League tete-a-tete at Campanelli Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Rox (16-11 second half, 43-31 overall) drew first blood in the second, as C Chris Grossman reached on an error, moved to second on LF Mike Conroy's single, and came around to score on 3B Derek Kinzler's single.

New Jersey (13-15, 32-42) tied the game in the fourth on 2B Travis Jones' sacrifice fly, but Brockton quickly regained the advantage in its half of the frame with SS Dominic Ramos' RBI double, bringing home RF Keith Brachold.

The Jackals made it a 2-2 game two innings later, with Jones hitting a single that enabled 1B Jabe Bergeron to score, but Brockton took a 4-2 lead in the sixth with Grossman's two-run home run over the left-field wall. The Rox then added another run with 1B Melvin Falu's two-out RBI double in the seventh, bringing home reigning Can-Am League Player of the Week 2B Shawn Williams.

New Jersey started its late-inning comeback with a run in the eighth via C Angel Flores' RBI double, and then tied the game with Bergeron's two-run homer with one out off of Brockton closer Hunter Davis in the ninth.

After a scoreless tenth, the Jackals broke out with a four-run 11th inning for the win. Bergeron smacked a one-out double and went to third on RF Carlos Sosa's single. Sosa then ran to second on a wild pitch by Francisco Ortiz; Grossman's wild throw went into center field, enabling Bergeron to trot home. After the next batter, Jones, walked, Flores blasted a three-run homer to make the score 9-5.

The Rox put up a fight in their half of the 11th, as Ramos led off with a triple and scored on Kinzler's subsequent double, but it was as close as they could come as Brockton finished the evening with its second straight defeat after nine consecutive victories.

Rox starter Mike Smith, who entered the game tied for the league lead with ten victories, had another solid outing, allowing two runs on seven hits in six innings of work, but received a no-decision. His six strikeouts on the night also put him first in the Can-Am with 94. New Jersey starter Ryan Lobban went seven innings and gave up five runs on thirteen hits.

Buster Lussier (1-5) took the loss for Brockton, giving up the first two runs in the eleventh. Edward Rodriguez (5-3) had an excellent night in relief and picked up the win, throwing two scoreless innings and striking out four.

On the Rox side, 1B Melvin Falu went 3-for-5 on the night, while Grossman, Kinzler and DH John Parke, making his Campanelli Stadium debut, each had a pair of hits. For New Jersey, six different players had multiple hits, with Sosa and C Angel Flores leading the way with 4-for-6 nights.

The two teams will meet in the second of the three-game set on Wednesday evening in a battle of southpaws, with Brockton's Mike Wlodarczyk (9-3) facing the Jackals' Justin Jones (0-1) at 7:05 p.m.
