Brockton Rox News Release
BROCKTON â The Rox dropped the opening game of the three-game series with the New Jersey Jackals Friday night at Campanelli Stadium, falling 8-6 in front of a sell-out crowd of 5,625.
The Jackals opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning. The Rox answered back with three in their half of the inning. Nestor Smith drew a lead-off walk and went to third on Abner Arroyo's double. Saul Bustos's fourth home run of the year scored Smith and Arroyo ahead of him, putting the Rox ahead, 3-2.
The Rox added two more in the second inning. Brian Jones (2-for-4) singled, stole second, and scored on Mike Torres's double to center. Arroyo's single to right scored Torres, giving the Rox a 5-2 advantage.
The Rox added a solo run in the third when Francisco Matos walked and went to third on a Jones single. Kris Zacuto's double to left scored Matos, putting the Rox up, 6-2.
After that it was all New Jersey as three Jackals pitchers combined to shut down the next 19 Rox batters after Zacuto's double, and the New Jersey bats heated up for six runs and 11 hits between the fifth and eighth innings. Former Red Sox prospect Wilton Veras (he appeared in 85 games for the Red Sox between 1999-2000) went 4-for-5 with three RBI for the Jackals.
Jerry Dunn (0-1) who pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief was tagged with the loss.
Arroyo's two hits extended his hitting streak to six games while Bustos's first-inning homer stretched his streak to seven games.
The Rox (21-7) take on the Jackals (13-15) Saturday at 7:11 p.m. at Campanelli for wooden-bat giveaway night, presented by Citizens Bank. The first 1,000 children 12 years old and under will receive free 30-inch wooden bats.
The Brockton Rox, 2003 champions of the independent Northeast League, have three additional dates and four additional games to their schedule at Campanelli Stadium. The games will be vs. The Aces, the NEL's road team, and are scheduled for July 30 â Aug. 1 with a doubleheader July 31. For tickets call 508-559-7070 or go to www.brocktonrox.com.
