Rox Can't Get Bats Going vs Silver Knights

June 3, 2016 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Brockton Rox News Release

Opening Day left a sour taste in the mouths of Rox fans as they filed out of Campenelli Stadium. The Rox failed to generate any kind of offense as the Silver Knights shut out the Rox 6-0.

Silver Knight's starting pitcher Drew Fischer was stellar in his season debut. Looking like he could go the distance, Fischer was pulled after 5 innings of work. He managed to prevent the Rox from getting a single hit during his stint on the mound.

At one point, the Rox seemed to gain an edge on Fischer. However, after noticing his fast-paced delivery, Rox manager Jeff Szafarski encouraged his players to step out of the batter box to slow Fischer down. In the 4th inning, the results looked encouraging after Fischer walked his first two batters faced. But he eventually composed himself and struck out the next three batters he faced.

Fischer's opposing pitcher, Justin Lasko, performed well for the Rox. Lasko also lasted 5 innings, but didn't have as much success. Behind a defense that had two errors, 4 runs were scored in Lasko's time on the mound, but only 1 was earned.

Those four runs would be all the Silver Knight's needed. But insurance runs in the ninth inning allowed breathing room for the Knight's. A pair of wild pitches by Rox pitcher Jake Hamilton, Cameron Cruz was allowed a free pass to home. Later in the inning, a ground ball to second base by Charlie McConnell forced second basemen Jackson Strange to throw to first, leading to yet another Knight's run.

The Rox had no tricks up their sleeves in the bottom of the ninth. With 2 outs, the Rox were able to get both Lambrecht and Feliz on base, by Knight's pitchers Taylor Doyle struck out Alex Perry to end the game.

One positive for the Rox is star right fielder Eric Feliz. He managed to break up the Silver Knight's cumulative no hitter in the 6th inning by belting a single up the middle. He finished 2-3 with 2 walks. Rox catcher Anthony George was the only other player on the Rox who waged to get a hit the whole game.

The Rox look to bounce back on the road Friday as they take on the Torrington Titans. The team returns to Campenelli Stadium Saturday night where they will face the Wachusett Dirt Dogs. With the return to Saturday night games also marks the return of Saturday night fireworks! Gates open at 6:05. See you there!
