Brockton Rox News Release
(Brockton, MA â January 8, 2004) Fresh off a season that saw Ed Nottle guide the Rox to their first Northeast League Championship in just two seasons of existence, the team announced today they had reached terms on a contract extension bringing Nottle back for the 2004 season.
"I felt I was destined to manage the Boston Red Sox and it didn't happen, but I ended up as close as I could in professional baseball. It has turned out to be more rewarding to manage in Brockton than I could have ever imagined," said Rox Manager Ed Nottle. "I have managed in many cities and none of those places have I ever called home. Brockton is not only my home but my heart as well."
Ed Nottle, entering his third season at the helm of the Rox and 44th year in professional baseball, guided the Rox to a 50-39 record last season securing a playoff spot in the franchise's second year of existence. Nottle was named Baseball America's first ever Minor League Manager of the Year in 1981, while managing in Tacoma, and was also named Pacific Coast and International League Manager of the Year during his career. Nottle has amassed a 92-86 record in his two seasons with Brockton and has a 6-1 postseason record.
"Ed (Nottle) did a great job this year utilizing his roster while guiding the Rox to the championship," said Rox Owner Van Schley. "The Rox have now established themselves as a premier franchise in this league and from now on we expect to be in the playoffs every year. That is a testament to Ed's excellent work. He is an extremely positive asset in establishing and spreading the Rox name."
Nottle was selected to be the Northeast League All-Star Manager after winning the championship this past season. This season, the Northeast League and Central League have merged their All-Star Games. The Northeast League All-Stars will compete against the Central League All-Stars in an inter-league affair. The game will be held July 20th in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Rox manager is the subject of an upcoming movie based on his life with a working title of, "I'm Still Standing." The movie is slated to be released in 2005.
The Brockton Rox play their home games in the "City of Champions" state-of-the-art baseball facility, Campanelli Stadium, adjacent to the Shaw's Center, a meeting and banquet facility. The club plays a 92-game schedule in the eight-team independent Northeast League.
