January 8, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Bangor Lumberjacks News Release
Bangor, ME- The Bangor Lumberjacks, a proud member of the Northeast League, announced today that they have acquired RHP Oscar Montero (pronounced Mon tair O) from the Joliet (IL) Jackhammers, of the Northern League, in exchange for OF Barry Paulk.
Last season for Joliet, Montero was 2-4 with a 3.16 ERA and nine saves in 45 appearances, which ranked second in the NL. The Venezuela native struck out 41 in 57.0 innings pitched. Oscar finished 8th in the voting for the Rolaids Relief Pitcher of the Year with 23 points last season. He was originally signed by the Milwaukee Brewers as a non-drafted free agent in 1996 as an outfielder, but was switched by the Brewers to a pitcher shortly after his signing at age 16. He has since played in the Cubs organization as well.
Montero had nine saves with the Daytona (FL) Cubs in 2002. For his career, Oscar is 21-28 and has posted a 4.59 ERA and 24 saves. The 25 year-old has struck out 316 in 361.0 innings.
"We're very excited to have Oscar come in and compete for the closer's position," stated Lumberjacks General Manager Curt Jacey. "Our bullpen was a weakness last season, and something that we needed to address during the off season."
Paulk, acquired in midseason following his release from the Mets organization, hit .305 with a home run and 10 RBI in 26 games.
Season Tickets and Pack Tickets are on sale now at the Jacks store in the Bangor Mall. The Lumberjacks begin the 2004 season on the road in New Jersey, and open at home on Thursday, June 3 at the new John Winkin Baseball Complex on the campus of Husson College in Bangor.
