Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Jesus Guzman and Brett Pill clubbed back-to-back homers in the top of the first, and Eric Hacker logged his Pacific Coast League-leading 13th win as the Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Round Rock Express 8-1 Thursday night at The Dell Diamond. The Express (45-68) were held to just five hits by the Grizzlies (63-50), who evened the series at a game apiece.
Tyler Graham singled with one out in the top of the first; he then stole second and third with two outs before Guzman homered on a 3-1 Josh Banks offering. Pill followed with a solo homer on a 1-0 pitch.
That proved to be more than enough run support for Hacker (13-5), who allowed one run on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts over 8.1 innings. He left the game with runners at second and third and one out in the ninth, but Craig Whitaker closed the game with a pair of strikeouts.
After Collin DeLome's one-out singe in the second, Hacker induced an inning-ending double play from Oswaldo Navarro. That was the last hit Hacker allowed until Chris Shelton's two-out double in the seventh, retiring 15 straight in between.
Fresno added a run on two hits in both the third and fourth innings, and the Grizzlies pushed their lead to 7-0 with a pair of unearned runs in the fifth.
Matt Kata followed Shelton's two-out double in the seventh with an RBI single, plating the Express' lone run of the night. Joe Borchard's one-out solo homer in the top of the ninth capped the scoring.
Banks (8-8) suffered the loss, his third straight and only his third in 10 decisions at home this season. He allowed a season-high seven runs, only five of which were earned, on nine hits and a walk with three strikeouts over 5.0 innings. Banks entered the game averaging 6.0 runs of support per game in 12 starts at The Dell Diamond.
Graham and Jackson Williams both delivered three-hit games for the Grizzlies, who tallied 16 hits on the night; the latter scored twice. Borchard was 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, and Guzman scored twice. Pill, Hacker and Ryan Rohlinger had two hits each.
Kata had two of Round Rock's five hits in three at bats. Brian Bogusevic also had a ninth-inning double.
Round Rock and Fresno continue their four-game series Friday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Southpaw Andy Van Hekken (6-6, 4.40 ERA) is slated to toe the slab for the Express, while right-hander Henry Sosa (6-4, 4.03 ERA) will go for the Grizzlies.
