Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

The New Orleans Zephyrs took advantage of several Colorado Springs miscues en route to a 6-2 victory on Thursday night at Security Service Field in front on 2,609 fans.

The game started with a bizarre top of the first. The Sky Sox, the team with the best fielding percentage and fewest errors in the PCL, committed three errors in the inning that led to four Zephyrs runs although only one of them was earned. Scott Cousins started the inning by reaching second on a fielding error by first baseman Brad Eldred before moving to third on a pickoff throw error by Jhoulys Chacin. Cameron Maybin then singled home Cousins to make it 1-0. Mike Lamb reached on a fielding error by shortstop Jonathan Herrera to put runners at first and second and Chacin hit Mark Saccomano with a pitch to load the bases. Brian Barden then doubled down the left field line to plate two to make it 3-0. The next batter, Danny Richar, was called out on a check swing by home plate umpire Darren Budahn and was ejected for arguing the call. John Raynor drove in the final run of the inning with a groundout to short to push the New Orleans lead to 4-0 before Neil Wilson grounded out to finally end the inning.

In the second inning, New Orleans would strike for another unearned run off of Chacin. Starting pitcher Tom Mastny reached on a throwing error by Chacin and one out later came around to score on a triple by Maybin. Chacin would strand Maybin at third however after inducing Lamb to groundout to first and striking out Saccomano.

The Springs started to battle back in the sixth against Mastny when Mike Paulk led the inning off with a walk. Up stepped Eldred, and after a long at bat that saw him fall behind 0-2 before seeing nine pitches, he launched a titanic blast to centerfield for his fourth homer in his last five games. The home run was Eldred's 26th on the year and tied him for second in the PCL with Salt Lake's Mark Trumbo.

A sacrifice fly by Barden in the seventh got a run back for New Orleans and pushed their lead to 6-2.

Mastny (4-2) picked up the win for the Zephyrs after giving up two runs on four hits in 5.1 innings. Chacin (3-2) was saddled with the loss after giving up just five runs, one earned on four hits.

Game three of the series is set for tomorrow night at 7:05 PM (MDT) with the Sox sending out RH Chaz Roe (7-11, 5.95) to face RH Alejandro Sanabia who will be making his Triple-A debut.
