Roulis' Five Hits Pushes Mountaineers to 5-1 Win Over Laconia

LACONIA, N.H. - A big eighth inning by the Vermont offense coupled with a very impressive start by junior right-handed pitcher Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y. / Le Moyne) propelled the Mountaineers to a 5-1 victory over Northern Division foe, Laconia, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Robbie Mills Field on Monday night.

Senior Thomas Roulis (New Hyde Park, N.Y. / Dartmouth) went five-for-five with four singles followed by a solo homerun in the ninth to cap off the night.

The Mountaineers broke the scoreless tie in the sixth inning. Roulis led off the inning with a single, but was thrown out in his attempt to swipe second. Two batters later and with two outs, junior Ridge Smith (Clarksville, Tenn. / Austin Peay) singled. He stole second and scored when his college teammate, sophomore Garrett Copeland (Bartlett, Tenn. / Austin Peay), blooped a single down the right field line to give Vermont a 1-0 edge.

The Mountaineers added three more runs in the eighth inning. Roulis led off with a base knock. Two batters later, Smith was hit by a pitch to setup first and second with one out. Copeland then reached on an error by Laconia senior shortstop Vinny DeMaria (Tarrytown, N.Y. / Iona). Roulis scored from second on the play to make it 2-0. Senior catcher Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla. / Maine Orono) then cranked an RBI double to right, scoring Smith from second and advancing Copeland to third. Sophomore Austin Clemons (Louisville, Ky. / Louisville) followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Copeland and make it 4-0 Vermont.

Laconia scored its lone run of the game off of an error in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it 4-1.

With two outs in the top of the ninth, Roulis connected on a solo blast to right field make it 5-1 Mountaineers.

Powers earned the win to improve to 1-0. The righthander dealt six innings of scoreless ball. He allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out seven.

Muskrats' starter, senior Josh Moore (Villa Ridge, Mo. / St. Louis) took the loss despite pitching very well. Moore lasted six innings, allowing one earned run on seven hits and no walks. He struck out nine while falling to 0-1.

For Vermont, senior left-handed reliever Garrison Banas (Hadley, Mass. / Bryant) pitched an inning and one third and allowed one unearned run on one hit. He struck out one.

Sophomore Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif. / Eastern Michigan) earned a five out save, his first of the summer. In an inning and two-thirds, he allowed no runs, no hits, no walks and struck out four.

The Mountaineers return to action on Tuesday, June 9, when they host the Sanford Mainers for a 6:30 p.m. contest at Recreation Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
