Gulls Tie Gatemen in CCBL Exhibition, 5-5

WAREHAM, Mass. - With not much to play for other than pride, the Newport Gulls failed to hold onto a lead in their exhibition game Sunday. The Gulls tied the Cape Cod Baseball League's Wareham Gatemen 5-5 at Spillane Field in Wareham. The Gulls still hold an edge in the all-time series 3-1-1.
The Gulls jumped out to an early lead, scoring five runs over the first three innings. Newport scored two in each of the first two innings and another run came across in the third, shifting momentum all the way towards the visitors.
Troy DeLeon started for Newport, keeping Wareham's batters off balance for most of his outing. DeLeon ended up going 6.2 innings, and gave up one earned run.
The Gulls cruised for most of the game, up 5-1, but Wareham pushed across two unearned runs in the seventh inning and one more run in the eighth to cut the lead to one heading into the ninth.
With two outs in the ninth, Wareham had two men on base with two outs and Max Beermann on the mound. Beermann induced a ground ball that could have given Newport a victory, but the ball was booted by Kevin Baker, allowing the tying run to come across home plate.
Being an exhibition contest, the game was called after nine innings were complete, marking the first tie in the annual exhibition series that swaps fields between Cardines and Spillane annually.
Newport's next game will be Monday night in Mystic against the Schooners, who the Gulls beat in their home opener last Friday. Robert Masse and Alex Teixeira will have the call on the NECBL Broadcast Network. The Gulls are off on Tuesday, and will take on the Keene Swampbats at Cardines Field on Wednesday, June 10.
