Cedar Rapids RoughRiders News Release
Cedar Rapids, Iowa- Cedar Rapids RoughRiders captain Scott Wietecha has committed to Ferris State University, the RoughRiders announced today. Wietecha will begin his college career next season.
"This is certainly great news for Scott," said RoughRiders coach and general manager Mark Carlson. "He's worked very hard since he first got here and to see his efforts rewarded is tremendous."
Wietecha, a 19-year old defenseman, is in his second season with the team. The 19-year old Wolverine Lake, Michigan, native has picked up one assist in three games this season while posting a plus/minus rating of +1. Wietecha has missed the Riders' last four games with a shoulder injury.
Last year Wietecha scored one goal and totaled four points in 39 games. He was selected by RoughRiders in the fourth round of the May, 2005 USHL draft with the forty-third overall pick.
Ferris State has gone 1-3-0 in Central College Hockey Association play and 3-5-0 overall this season. Former Rider Zach Pearson is currently a senior at Ferris State.
Wietecha joins Jacob Cepis (Bowling Green), Doug Jones (Princeton), Andy Miele (Miami of Ohio), Matt Tomassoni (Miami of Ohio), Kevin Wehrs (Minnesota) and Tommy Wingels (Miami of Ohio) as the seventh member of the 2006-07 RoughRiders to make a college commitment.
Wietecha and the RoughRiders (4-3-0, 8 points) are in second place in the USHL's East Division, four points behind the division-leading Waterloo Black Hawks. The Riders will visit the Sioux Falls Stampede tomorrow night before returning home to meet the Lincoln Stars Saturday evening at 7:05.
