Cedar Rapids RoughRiders News Release

The Cedar Rapids RoughRiders announced today that they have signed lefthand-shooting forward Thomas Vandenberg to a USHL tender agreement for the 2024-25 season.

Described as a highly-skilled center who plays a 200-foot game, Vandenberg is a product of the Ottawa (Ont.) Myers Automotive 16U AAA organization where he registered 24 goals and 19 assists for 43 points in 26 games this year. The Nepean, Ont., native added nine goals and seven assists for 16 points in 12 playoff games while leading his team to the Hockey Eastern Ontario Championship.

Vandenberg, who is listed at 5-11 and weighs 161 lbs., also played with the Myers Automotive 18U AAA team this season where he had 1-2-3 in five games.

"Our scouting staff did a great job identifying Thomas," said Mark Carlson, Cedar Rapids Head Coach and General Manager. "He is a very talented, responsible, hardworking hockey player that displays leadership ability on and off the ice. His hockey sense, vision, skating and work ethic impact the game. He's a competitive, character guy that plays with physicality and plays hard in all three zones."

"The entire Roughrider organization is very excited to work with Thomas on his development as a hockey player and as a person. We welcome Thomas and the Vandenberg family to the Stable and Ridertown USA." added Carlson.

"I'm thrilled that Mark and the Cedar Rapids organization have chosen me to be a RoughRider," said Vandenberg. "I'm very excited to get to work and start the next chapter of my hockey journey in the USHL."

The USHL tender process allows teams to sign up to two 2008 birth year players in exchange for their first and second-round picks in the 2024 USHL Phase I Draft. As a result of signing Vandenberg the RoughRiders surrender their first-round pick in Phase I of the USHL Draft this upcoming spring. Each tendered player will be on their respective team's roster the next season and play at least 55% of the team's regular season games.
