CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Fighting Saints scored first on Friday night in Cedar Rapids, but the RoughRiders grabbed the lead and skated away with the victory, winning 6-3 in the first game of a two-game weekend set.
The Fighting Saints grabbed a lead early on in the first period. After Tyler Lundey poked the puck free at center ice, TJ Moor turned on the jets into the offensive zone and gave Dubuque a 1-0 lead after a short breakaway, sliding the puck through Jake Hildebrand's five-hole. Cedar Rapids tied the game with Andrew Poturalski stuffing a puck in from behind the net for his first USHL goal in his first game in the league. Ryan McGrath scored a similar wraparound goal minutes later to give the RoughRiders the lead. He would then assist on Gerry Mayhew's tally, setting his linemate up from the left circle for a backdoor tap in to put the score at 3-1 late in the period.
The RoughRiders continued the attack in the second period. Tom Forgione was credited with a goal when a puck went off a Fighting Saints defenseman and past Morris early in the period. Poturalski grabbed his second career goal on a quick netfront shot on a feed from behind the net a few minutes later. Finally, Landon Smith capitalized on a rebound to make it 6-1 with around four minutes to go in the frame. Dubuque trailed 6-1 after forty minutes despite outshooting the RoughRiders 16-13.
The Fighting Saints showed some life in the third period, with Tyler Lundey scoring a pair of goals to bring the final score to 6-3. On the first tally, Lundey received a pass from Zemgus Girgensons, skated into the slot, and hammered the puck into the net to cut the RoughRider lead to 6-2. Mike Matheson was credited with the secondary assist. Late in the game, Lundey slammed home a rebound to bring the Fighting Saints within three. The Fighting Saints would get no closer, with the RoughRiders winning their second game of the season against Dubuque.
The same two teams will take to the ice Saturday night at 7:05 in Dubuque, playing each other at the Mystique Community Ice Center for the final time this regular season. The Fighting Saints will host the Muskegon Lumberjacks next Friday night, and travel to Waterloo to play the Black Hawks on Saturday.
