Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Urbandale, IA-The Stampede season is starting to sound like a broken record. Great effort, but coming up a little short. That continued Friday night as the Stampede played well, but struggled to score and fell to the Des Moines Buccaneers 3-1. The loss dropped the Herd to 12-22-3 on the season and five points back of the Bucs for the final playoff spot in the West. It marks the first time this season the Herd have lost to the Bucs.
The Bucs grabbed the first goal of the game 4:53 into the game when Trent Samuels-Thomas benefited from a loose puck and an open net. Duggie Lagrone started the play breaking through the Stampede zone and feeding it in the slot to Garret Allen whose shot was stopped by the pad of Lindgren, but bounced to Samuels-Thomas who fired a shot into the back of the net with Lindgren down on the ice. The Bucs controlled the rest of the period and outshot the Stampede 15-4. Charlie Lindgren was the story for Sioux Falls, stopping a shorthanded breakaway and making several big stops to keep the score just 1-0 after one period.
The Stampede looked like a totally different team in the second period, outplaying the Bucs for most of the period. The Herd rattled off 14 shots in the period, but were unable to beat Buccaneers netminder Phoenix Copley who denied the Stampede of tying the game. The Herd outshot the Bucs 14-5 in the period, but still trailed 1-0 at the end of two periods.
Sioux Falls finally broke through at 7:31 of the third period on Kyle Rankin's team leading 11th goal of the season. Joseph Lordo blasted a shot through traffic from the left point that was tipped by Justin Selman and then bounced to Rankin who put home the rebound to tie the game at one. Things were looking good for the Herd, but much like the season has gone, the Stampede were unable to take the lead and the Bucs went ahead 2-1 less than three minutes later when Gasper Kopitar wristed a shot past the stick side of Lindgren. The Herd would go on to survive two penalty kills into the final minute where the Herd pulled Lindgren for an extra attacker. The Herd won the draw in the Bucs zone back to Joseph Lordo whose shot was blocked, as Lordo went to retrieve the puck it looked as though he was tripped, but the puck was picked up by Kopitar who skated all the way down the ice and scored into the empty net for his second of the night and to seal the game 3-1.
Des Moines outshot the Stampede 31-24 on the night and finished 0 for 3 on the powerplay as did the Stampede. The Herd will look to rebound and get back into the win column when they travel to Lincoln Saturday to face the Stars at the Ice Box at 7:05 PM.
