RoughRider Alumni Goepfert, Watson Earn Hockey East Honors

Cedar Rapids, Iowa- Former Cedar Rapids RoughRider and current Providence College Friar goaltender Bobby Geopfert was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week yesterday, while P.C. teammate and fellow RoughRider alumnus Chase Watson was named the conference's Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week.

Goepfert stopped 34 of 35 shots in Providence's 2-1 win last Friday at Minnesota State. One night later the Kings Park, New York, native made 21 saves in a 5-3 victory over the same opponent as the Friars completed a weekend sweep of the Mavericks. For the season Goepfert has gone 4-0 with a 2.00 goals against average and a .927 save percentage.

Watson scored two goals and added a pair of assists in P.C.'s two wins. Saturday night the freshman forward scored the game winning goal and also added a clinching empty netter. Watson took home the same hardware last week after scoring in the Friars' opening weekend wins over Sacred Heart and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Watson (4-3-7) is currently tied for the Providence team point scoring lead.

Goepfert played two seasons in Cedar Rapids (2000-2002) and owns every franchise goaltending record. He played 96 games during his RoughRider career, posting a 52-28-9 record, a 2.45 goals against average, nine shutouts and a .926 save percentage. Following the 2001-02 season, Goepfert was named United States Hockey League Player of the Year and Goaltender of the Year after going 27-16-5 with a 2.04 goals against average, eight shutouts and a .936 save percentage in his final junior campaign. Watson spent two and a half season in Cedar Rapids and finished his RoughRiders career last season as the franchise's all-time career points (97) and assists (63) leader. The Media, Pennsylvania, native also ranks third in team history in career goals (34) and games played (138).

Goepfert and Watson are just two of the five former RoughRiders who play for the thirteenth ranked Friars. Forwards Kevin Brooks, Nate Meyers and Dave Carpentier also skated in Cedar Rapids before heading to Providence.
