Calgary Roughnecks News Release

The Calgary Roughnecks moved one step closer to securing a playoff berth Saturday night as they whipped the San Jose Stealth 12-10 in front of 12,224 fans.

Things looked grim early on as the Stealth put two goals, 12 seconds apart past Riggers starter, Curtis Palidwor before four minutes had ticked off the clock in the first quarter.

Undeterred the ‘necks put three straight past Stealth keeper, Brandon Miller to take a 3-2 lead into the second stanza.

San Jose tied the score at three with a bizarre goal that came from a rebound off the end board that hit Palidwor's elbow pad and snuck into the net. Calgary did, however, take a 5-4 lead into the halftime break on goals by Kyle Goundrey and Grant Hamilton.

In the third stanza, Riggers' Captain, Tracey Kelusky marked his name on "goals" side of the score sheet with two blasts, 40 seconds apart that put his side three goals to the good.

Palidwor followed up a strong first half with an even better final 30 minutes stoning Stealth forwards inside and outside to record 36 saves on the night.

Calgary's special teams shone through on the evening as the man up unit scored on three of their four opportunities while the man down squad held San Jose to only one goal on their four chances.

With San Jose inching closer in the fourth, Riggers' forward, Kevin Dostie potted three goals in 11 minutes to seal the victory for the home side. The Roughnecks' leading scorer in 2005, Lewis Ratcliff recorded is 300th career point with an assist on Dostie's second goal.

Scoring for the home side on Saturday was taken care of by player-of-the-game, Kelusky (3G, 4A), Ratcliff (1G, 5A), Goundrey (1G, 3A), Dostie (3G, 1A), Jason Wulder (2G, 1A), Taylor Wray (2A), Palidwor (1A), Ryan McNish (1G), Jeff Moleski (1A), Hamilton (1G) and Andrew McBride (1A).

Because the Buffalo Bandits defeated the Stealth on Friday and the Arizona Sting tonight, the ‘necks are hoping for a Colorado win over Arizona Sunday night, which will clinch Calgary a berth in the NLL playoffs.

Up next for the Roughnecks is a home match with the Sting next Saturday, April 8 at the Pengrowth Saddledome; ball drop is 7:30pm Mountain Time.
