The Tulsa Roughnecks first adventure into the historic Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup was a successful one Wednesday night. The Roughnecks edged Seacoast United 1-0 at Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium on the campus of the University of Tulsa.

Ben Brewster helped the Roughnecks defeat his former squad, Seacoast United, 1-0 Wednesday night.

The victory means Tulsa advances to the third round of the competition for a special Cup version of the Oklahoma Derby. The Roughnecks will now host the Oklahoma City Energy at ONEOK Field next Wednesday, May 27, in a third round matchup. Kickoff is slated for 7:00PM and tickets will go on sale Thursday at the ONEOK Field Ticket Office and online at TulsaRoughnecksFC.com.

Wednesday's victory did not come easily against Seacoast United, an amateur side that plays in the PDL. Weather in Tulsa must have made the Phantoms, who are based out of Hampstead, New Hampshire, feel at home, as temperature was in the 50s with a brisk north wind.

Seacoast opened the match on the attack and put the Roughnecks on the defensive. Forward Anthony Grant got behind the defense and circled around goalkeeper Zac Lubin, but his shot lacked strength and was cleared before crossing the line.

Tulsa weathered the early storm and began to produce chances. In the 15th minute, Gibson Bardsley got on the end of a cross from Steven Miller, but his header rattled off the crossbar to keep the match scoreless.

In the 37th minute, it was Seacoast who nearly went in front. Abel Perez beat Lubin, but his shot struck the post to keep the match scoreless.

After the halftime break, the Roughnecks had the wind at their backs and finally opened the scoring in the 58th minute. Chad Bond did his best David Beckham imitation and scored directly on a corner kick to put Tulsa in front 1-0.

From there, the Roughnecks seemed content to keep the one-goal lead, but the Phantoms did not go away quietly. Most of the action was played in Lubin's half of the field, but the Tulsa defense held.

The final chance for Seacoast came in stoppage time when Eli Galbraith-Knapp was called for a hand ball at the top of the box, but the shot from Perez was wide of goal.

Seconds later, the final whistle blew, sending the Roughnecks into a third-round meeting with state rivals Oklahoma City.
