Penn FC News Release
Harrisburg, PA (May 21, 2015) - For the second year in a row the Harrisburg City Islanders will be playing in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after taking down Reading United A.C.
The last time the teams met in the tournament Reading pulled the upset and sent Harrisburg packing. This time Harrisburg recorded three goals from three different players, while Kyle Renfro got his first start in goal and stopped every shots he faced to move on to the third round.
Danny DiPrima and Cardel Benbow got the team on the board early, scoring two minutes apart to get the game off to a fast start. Ken Tribbett finished off the scoring with his third goal of the season at the start of the second half. Jason Plumhoff assisted on two of the three goals.
In the next round the Islanders will face the Rochester Rhinos at home on City Island Wednesday, May 27 at 7 p.m. It will be the first meeting between the teams this season.
It will be a match-up of two of the top five teams in the USL Eastern Conference. Rochester is currently at the top-spot and the Islanders are currently in fifth. The two are not scheduled to face each other in USL play until later in the season.
Harrisburg has won their last four overall games and hasn't lost a game at home this season.
During their winning streak the Islanders have scored 11 goals and have only let up one. There have been eleven different players who have scored for the Islanders this season. Tribbett is the leading scorer followed closely behind by Jimmy McLaughlin.
Rochester advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday after beating Great Binghamton FC 1-0. The Rhinos have been on a tear through the league this season and have not lost a game yet. Goalkeeper Brandon Miller has only let up three goals on 14 shots.
In 2014 The Islanders failed to win in their two meetings. They played to a 2-2 draw in Rochester and lost 4-1 on City Island.
If the Islanders are able to keep their winning streak going they will advance to the fourth round for the second time in the last four years. Last season they were able to make it to the fourth round after taking down two MLS teams but ultimately lost to the Philadelphia Union in the quarterfinals.
