Real Monarchs News Release

Sandy, Utah (Thursday, May 21, 2015) - Real Monarchs earned its first-ever U.S. Open Cup victory over Long Island Rough Riders Wednesday night on the road, as MF Ricardo Velazco buried the game-winner - assisted by FW Max Rauhofer - in the 77th minute.

With the win, Salt Lake City's expansion USL side advances to host fellow USL club and regional rival Colorado Springs next Wednesday, May 27 at Rio Tinto Stadium. Kickoff will be at 7:00 p.m. MT, with tickets available at RealMonarchs.com, RioTintoStadium.com or at the Sandy venue's box office, open daily M-F 10-6, as well as 10a MT this Saturday (RSL gameday v NYCFC). Monarchs' season ticket holders should watch their e-mail for special instructions on how to obtain their seats for next week's game.

The Monarchs enjoyed the majority of the possession against Long Island, barely permitting the home side to penetrate its attacking third, but were unable to finish the final pass or shot on several half-chances in the first 45 minutes. Rough Riders GK Joe Martin came up with several stops to thwart Monarchs attacks. The closest chance for the Monarchs came in the 35th minute, when Velazco's corner found Rauhofer for a clear header, but his attempt went straight to the goalkeeper. The Rough Riders had a chance of their own right at the close of the first half, but GK Eric Osswald stuffed the shot to preserve his shutout and send the teams into the half tied 0-0.

The second half started with both teams very chippy and a few yellow cards being shown to the home side. Real Monarchs broke the deadlock in the 77th minute when Velazco and Rauhofer combined for a give-and-go to send Velazco behind the defense and slot the ball past Martin for the 1-0 advantage.

The Monarchs have already played the Switchbacks twice in USL regular season play, losing 0-1 at home back on April 11, and suffering a 2-5 loss at Colorado Springs six days later in a blizzard-laden match. The clubs also faced each other in their final preseason tuneup in Grand Junction, Colo., Monarchs winning 1-0 in that contest.
