Calgary Roughnecks News Release
CALGARY, AB - Calgary Roughnecks President and General Manager Brad Banister announced today that the club has signed forward Josh Sanderson and defenceman Dan Hartzell to one-year deals.
Terms of the deals were not disclosed and are subject to league approval.
"Josh is one of the best play-makers in the league, so all the players on offence look forward to playing with him," said Banister.
"Tracey (Kelusky) didn't really get a chance because of his injuries last year, so we really haven't seen the true capabilities of Josh Sanderson."
Sanderson, a native of Orangeville, Ontario, tallied 14 points, including six goals and eight assists in four games with the Roughnecks last season.
The 31-year-old forward also spent time with the Toronto Rock in 2008, recording 23 goals, 27 assists for 50 points in 11 games. Seven of those goals were scored on the power play, while Sanderson also collected 61 loose balls.
"I think everybody is really excited about having Josh on the team this year," added Banister.
Sanderson was originally acquired by Calgary in a blockbuster trade with Toronto in March of 2008. The Roughnecks traded Lewis Ratcliff and a conditional first or second round selection in the 2009 Entry Draft in exchange for Sanderson and a first round selection in the 2008 Entry Draft.
Prior to his time with the Roughnecks, the five-foot-seven, 160-pounder played alongside the Toronto Rock, San Jose Stealth, Rochester Knighthawks and the Albany Attack, a team that later became the San Jose Stealth.
Sanderson, who won the Champions Cup with Toronto in 2005, was also named to the NLL All-Star lineup in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
In 144 career National Lacrosse League games, Sanderson has tallied 263 goals, 484 assists for a total of 747 points. In that time, he also collected 701 loose balls and racked up 91 penalty minutes.
During the 2008 playoffs, Sanderson notched 10 points, including two goals and eight assists in two games for Calgary.
Hartzell, who spent last season with the Sr. B Sherwood Park Outlaws, tallied 22 goals and 16 assists for 38 points in 15 games in 2008. He was ranked fifth in points in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.
The Outlaws, who hosted the 2008 President's Cup, lost 10-5 in the Final against the Owen Sound Woodsmen. In four playoff games, Hartzell notched seven points, including a goal and six assists. The defenceman also collected eight loose balls in that time.
