FC Tulsa News Release
The building of the Tulsa Roughnecks roster continued today with the signing of a veteran forward to the squad. Head Coach David Irving announced that former Seattle Sounders player, Sammy Ochoa, has inked a deal with the new USL squad.
The 28-year-old Ochoa will bring valuable experience to the Roughnecks. His career has not only included a stint in MLS, but also in Liga MX.
He burst onto the soccer scene when he represented the United States U-20s at the 2005 FIFA Youth Championships in the Netherlands. He played in all four of the USA's games under coach Sigi Schmidt, scoring one goal. It came in a group stage meeting with Turkey.
Ochoa began his professional career the following year by making five appearances with Estudiantes Tecos in the Mexican Premier League. He spent a total of five seasons with the club before making the move to MLS.
In 2011, his first year with the Sounders, he scored a pair of goals, but it was the following year that he enjoyed his most success. Ochoa scored a total of 8 goals in 18 appearances, the third best total on the team. Three of the goals came in the CONCACAF Champions League.
After playing in only eight games the next season, Ochoa moved to USL PRO to play for Wilmington and Coach Irving during the 2014 season. He played in 25 matches with the Hammerheads and netted 6 goals.
Sammy is the younger brother of Jesus Ochoa, who also played in MLS with the Los Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA.
The Roughnecks will open the regular season this Saturday, March 28, by hosting the Oklahoma City Energy. Kickoff is slated for 7:00PM.
