Roughnecks Sign Former UAB DL Jerrickus Speights

ODESSA, TX. : The Odessa Roughnecks announced on Wednesday afternoon, June 24, that the team has acquired former University of Alabama - Birmingham defensive tackle, Jerrickus Speights. Speights (6'4", 265 lbs.) is scheduled to join the team on Wednesday and he will receive a good amount of playing time on the defensive line for the Roughnecks in their final three games of the regular season.
The Gardendale, Alabama native played for three seasons at UAB ('05-'07) and he was heavily scouted by the Oakland Raiders during the UAB NFL Pro Day Camp following his senior year in 2007. In â07, Speights played in 12 games recording 14 total tackles including 1.5 tackles for loss and one sack. In 2006, Speights participated in 10 games for the Blazers collecting 13 total tackles with 2.0 tackles for loss and two sacks. In his first full season with the UAB program, he saw action in six games and finished the season with seven tackles. He had a season-high three tackles in games versus SMU and the University of Texas-El Paso.
The 24-year-old Speights attended Gardendale High School and he was recognized as one of the State's top defensive lineman prospects. Speights was named to the Birmingham News 2003 All-State team and named to the first-team defensive Super All-Metro Team by the Birmingham Herald that same season. He led the team in tackles as a senior with 152 including 14 sacks and 26 tackles for loss. Speights also participated in the Mississippi / Alabama All-Star Game and he was named "North Zone" Player of the Year according to the Birmingham News. Speights played three seasons under Head Coach David Norwood and he additionally saw playing time at tight end.
