Roughnecks Season Comes To a Close with 56-36 First Round Playoff Loss to Amarillo

MIDLAND, TX. : The Cinderella-story of the 2010 West Texas Roughnecks came to a close on Monday, June 28 as the Roughnecks lost their first round playoff match-up to the Amarillo Venom, 56-36. The Roughnecks were down as much as 31-10 in the first-half, but a second-half surge allowed the Roughnecks to come within two scores of Amarillo in the fourth quarter. However, the Venom were able to hold on and earn the victory moving themselves into the Intense Conference semi-finals.

After the Roughnecks were able to take an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter, Amarillo posted 21 unanswered points with rushing touchdowns from RB DonTrell Moore and QB Julian Reese. Reese also connected on a 21-yard touchdown pass to WR Ricardo Lenhart. The Roughnecks countered with a 12-yard touchdown pass from QB Tommy Jones to WR Steve Bergeski to make it 21-10 late in the second quarter. The Venom tacked on ten points to close out the first half with a 34-yard touchdown pass from Julian Reese to DonTrell Moore and a 29-yard field goal from Darren McCaleb making it 31-10 at halftime.

The Roughnecks started the second-half on a good note as RB DeWayne Hogan punched in a one-yard touchdown run to make it 31-17 following a stop on defense from the Roughnecks. Amarillo would counter with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Reese to Lenhart to give the Venom a 38-17 lead. However, the Roughnecks hung tough as Tommy Jones found WR Josh Floyd for a seven-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 38-23.

Following a 38-yard touchdown pass from Julian Reese to WR Alex Watson, the Roughnecks would cut the deficit to 44-30 early in the fourth quarter as Tommy Jones connected with Steve Bergeski for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Following a 26-yard field goal from Darren McCaleb to make it 47-30, the Venom were able to close the book on the Roughnecks as the Amarillo defense recorded a safety and recorded a touchdown on their ensuing drive off a 15-yard touchdown run from Julian Reese to make it 56-30.

The Roughnecks were able to find the end-zone one last time as Tommy Jones connected with Steve Bergeski for a three-yard score, but Amarillo clinched the first round playoff victory at 56-36.

The Amarillo Venom will continue on to the Intense Conference semi-final round where they will host the Arkansas Diamonds. The West Texas Roughnecks conclude the 2010 season with a 7-8 overall record additionally reaching their six post-season appearance in their seven years of existence as a professional indoor football organization.
