
Roughnecks Pick up Third Straight Win with 70-55 finish over Abilene

MIDLAND, TX. : It was an exciting shoot-out at the Ector County Coliseum on Saturday, June 12, but the West Texas Roughnecks edged the Abilene Ruff Riders in the second-half to win their third straight ball game by the score of 70-55.
The Roughnecks and Ruff Riders exchanged touchdowns on eight consecutive possessions to make it a tie ball game at 28 during the late portions of the second quarter. Roughnecks QB Tommy Jones connected on three touchdown passes during that span with two going to WR Ryan Bugg. Ruff Riders QB Robert Kent posted two touchdown passes during that period with one going to WR Fred Howze and the other to LeJuan Edwards.
The Roughnecks were able to gain a 14-point advantage as WR Josh Floyd found the end-zone on a two-yard touchdown run. Following the touchdown run, the Roughnecks defense held QB Robert Kent short on fourth down and nine as he scrambled for a five-yard run. The Roughnecks took advantage of the turnover on downs as Tommy Jones found WR Steve Bergeski for a 22-yard touchdown pass to give the Roughnecks a 42-28 lead at halftime.
The Roughnecks started the second-half on a high note as LB Eric Henri intercepted Robert Kent. But after holding the Roughnecks on the next drive, Abilene found the end-zone as Kent connected with WR Desmond Sanders for a touchdown to make it 42-35.
The Roughnecks and Ruff Riders would exchange scores later in the third quarter as RB Jorvorskie Lane scored from four yards out to make it 49-35. Abilene countered with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Robert Kent to WR Santino Hall to make it 49-41. However, the Roughnecks were able to close out the third quarter with a three-yard touchdown run from WR Ryan Bugg making it 56-41.
Following another touchdown pass from Robert Kent to Santino Hall early in the fourth quarter, the Roughnecks expanded on their lead after Eric Henri posted his second interception of the ball game. QB Tommy Jones connected with WR Dexter Henderson for a 37-yard touchdown pass to give the Roughnecks a 62-49 advantage. Abilene would tack on a late six-yard touchdown run by Robert Kent, but after the Roughnecks recovered the following on-side kick RB Jorvorskie Lane posted his third rushing touchdown to seal the win for the Roughnecks at 70-55.
The Roughnecks have won three straight including four out of their last five games to move to 6-7 on the season. The Abilene Ruff Riders close out their 2010 regular season with a 2-12 record.
