Amarillo, TX - The Lonestar West Division champion Amarillo Venom handed the Austin Turfcats another loss Saturday night, winning 39-16.
Amarillo wide receiver Ricardo Lenhart carried the ball for the first score of the game. Austin's defense received a safety for their only points of the first quarter. Amarillo 7, Austin 2.
Austin's wide receiver Austin Willis started the scoring in the second quarter with a receiving touchdown followed by wide receiver Darrick Wallace completing a two point conversion. Venom wide receiver Anthony Clark responded with his own receiving touchdown (nine total) following a 44-yard pass from quarterback Sean Setzer. Austin's defensive back Shon Mitchell returned a 40-yard kickoff for a touchdown. Quarterback Sean Setzer rushed the ball for his first touchdown of the season. Defensive lineman Ray Gates completed the second quarter with his first touchdown and a sack, as Amarillo led 30-16 at the half.
Venom defensive back Darrius Battles dominated the third quarter with two interceptions (four total) adding to the team total of 25 interceptions this season. Kicker Darren McCaleb gave Amarillo their only points of the quarter with a 46-yard field goal (longest 47-yards). The Venom defense held the Turfcats to a scoreless quarter. Amarillo 33, Austin 16.
In the fourth quarter, defensive back Cashmin Thomas received his ninth interception (team total 26) returning the ball for a touchdown. Defensive lineman Brandon Jenkins racked up another sack (seven total). The Venom defense continued to dominate holding Austin to another scoreless quarter, guiding Amarillo to an 11-3 record. A final score, Amarillo 39, Austin 16.
The Venom will embark on their final game of the regular season Saturday June 19th at 7:05 CST in San Angelo. Fox 14 has teamed up with the Venom to televise the game and Buffalo Wild Wings will host the official "watch" party.
The Venom will also have special give-a-ways all night long including play-off tickets, special packages, t-shirts and much more. On-site will be Venom players and the Vixens for you to meet and get their autographs all while watching the game.
