Roughnecks Pick up First Win of the 2016 NLL Season

Uncasville, CT - The Calgary Roughnecks picked up their first win of the 2016 NLL regular season with a 9-8 decision over the New England Black Wolves on Friday evening at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Rookie Wesley Berg, who has now notched a goal in three consecutive games, opened the scoring for Calgary on the man-advantage. Former Roughnecks forward Shawn Evans and Sheldon Burns, shorthanded, replied for the Black Wolves to give the home club a 2-1 lead after the first 15 minutes.

A strong second quarter saw Calgary sink five goals including a pair of markers from Jeff Shattler and a single tally from rookie defenceman Kellen LeClair, marking his first career NLL goal.

The Roughnecks continued to carry the momentum in the second half, scoring a trio of goals while holding New England to just one power play tally to finish the third quarter with a 9-5 advantage. The Black Wolves closed the gap in the final 15 minutes but were not able to score the equalizer as Calgary goaltender Frankie Scigliano finished the game with 35 saves.

The road victory sees Calgary improve to 1-2 while New England drops to 1-1.

Following a bye in Week 4, the Roughnecks return to action on Saturday, Jan. 30, when the Vancouver Stealth visit the Scotiabank Saddledome for Stampeders Night presented by TELUS. Fans are encouraged to join the pre-game party in Dutton's Lounge and the Chrysler Club, open to all ages at 5:00 p.m., with faceoff at 7:00 p.m.
