West Texas Roughnecks News Release

MIDLAND, TX. : The Roughnecks will be looking for two straight wins on Saturday, April 24 when they host the San Angelo Stampede Express (4-2) on Breast Cancer Awareness Night from the Ector County Coliseum. It is the second meeting in three weeks between both teams as the Roughnecks (2-4) will be looking to avenge a 44-35 loss to San Angelo back on Saturday, April 10. The Roughnecks are coming off a thrilling come-from-behind win over the Austin Turfcats, 49-46, back on Saturday, April 17. Head Coach Chris Williams has turned the Roughnecks offense into a pass-first team, and the change has paid off as QB Tommy Jones has thrown for 11 touchdown passes in his last three games. WR Ryan Bugg has caught five touchdown passes in his last two games and he has quickly become one of the elite receivers in the Indoor Football League. WR Steve Bergeski has become a legitimate deep-play threat for the Roughnecks offense, but the key has been the protection up front from the offensive line. The work from the offensive line has allowed Jones time to throw, and the line will be key for the Roughnecks running game inside the red-zone. Look for DeWayne Hogan, Jorvorskie Lane and Josh Floyd to get carries from within that area. Additionally, look for newly acquired wide out Dexter Henderson to make an impact in the running game.

The Roughnecks defense made many key impact plays in last Saturday's win over Austin from players such as DB Austin Smith and DL James Vess. Vess, along with Jermaine Blakely and Jerrickus Speights, will have to contain the strong running game that San Angelo brings to the table with RB Derrick Ross. Ross posted over 80 yards rushing and three touchdowns against the Roughnecks back on April 10. The key pick-up this week for the Stampede Express was the signing of QB Dustin Almond. The Stampede Express will have help in the passing department with Almond taking over for QB Chad Draper. Almond posted several great seasons for the Corpus Christi Hammerheads but the key for the Roughnecks defense in order to contain Almond will be pressure. Linebacker Eric Henri is back in the Roughnecks line-up this week after being suspended for the Austin match-up. Rover Johnny Anderson will be inactive for Saturday's game but the Roughnecks will have DB Alex Otoo back on the active roster, and DB Austin Smith will be in a key role at the safety position.

This is the second and final meeting between both teams in the 2010 regular season, and the Roughnecks had several opportunities to win the first match-up, but second-half turnovers and poor field positioning allowed San Angelo to win the ball game. Those factors will play essential roles in Saturday's game especially in the second-half. Execution and capitalizing off turnovers will be important factors for the Roughnecks offense as this game holds plenty of importance in regards to playoff intentions. Both teams will be playing with pink footballs on Saturday evening in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Proceeds from the autographed pink football auctions will go to support the American Cancer Society.
