
Roughnecks end regular season with 40-32 loss

ODESSA, TX. : The Roughnecks were looking to end the 2009 season on high note on Saturday, July 11 versus the Abilene Ruff Riders but Odessa fell inches short of completing an incredible comeback with under a minute remaining in regulation. Odessa turned to Jason Johnson to lead the offense at the quarterback position as the Roughnecks got off on the right foot with DeWayne Hogan scoring on a three yard touchdown run giving Odessa a 7-0 lead.
Odessa then held Abilene on a fourth down situation but it was Joey Longoria who got the Ruff Riders on the board when he intercepted Johnson and returned it back 18 yards for a touchdown. Odessa would add to their 7-6 lead late in the first quarter when Hogan added his second rushing touchdown from three yards out to make it 13-6. Abilene regained momentum in the second quarter by outscoring the Roughnecks 20-0. Carlos Alsup registered a two-yard touchdown run and Brandon Henry return an interception back 19 yards for a score. Mike Carrillo caught a four yard touchdown pass from QB Randy Hymes following a Jason Johnson fumble. Abilene led at halftime, 26-13.
Abilene would get their largest lead of the game when Juan Reese caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Randy Hymes to make it 33-13 in the third quarter. Odessa would begin a great comeback that would carry over from the third to the fourth quarter. DeWayne Hogan added touchdown runs from 10 yards and one yard to close out the third quarter making it 33-26.
Abilene got a little bit of breathing room when Carlos Alsup registered an incredible 38 yard touchdown run to make it 40-26. Hogan added his fifth touchdown run from six yards out to make it 40-32. The Roughnecks defense stepped up late in the game when Larry Thompson recovered a fumble but with under 20 seconds remaining DeWayne Hogan fumbled the football at the goal line only to be recovered by Joey Longoria in the end-zone to seal the win for Abilene.
Hogan became the first Roughnecks player this season to collect all scoring touchdowns in one game for Odessa with five touchdown runs. Jimmy Conner finished with five catches for 93 yards capping off a year in which he led the IFL in receptions, receiving yards and all-purpose yards. Odessa finishes the 2009 season with a 3-11 record as Abilene finishes at 8-6. The Ruff Riders begin their post-season run this weekend when they host the San Angelo Stampede Express on Saturday, July 18.
