Generals Head Coach Brian Brents Named IFL Coach Of The Year

EL PASO, TX. : The Indoor Football League announced the 2009 Individual Awards early afternoon on Monday, July 13, 2009 and El Paso Generals Head Coach, Brian Brents, was named IFL Coach of the Year. Brents led the Generals to a 12-2 overall record and a 2009 Lone Star Division Championship in the Generals inaugural season. Under his offensive direction, Coach Brents developed the Generals into one of the best offenses in the IFL. El Paso was first in passing offense this season and they were second in points per game. The Generals won seven straight ball games to close out the ‘09 regular season and they have earned a first-round bye in the IFL playoffs.

Brents was named the Head Coach of the Generals back on October 23, 2008 after spending 2007 & 2008 serving as Head Coach of the Mississippi Mudcats of the AIFA. In ‘07, Brents led the Mudcats to a 12-4 regular season record including an appearance in the AIFA South Conference Championship game. In ‘08, Brents led Mississippi to a 12-1 record. The Crane, Texas native has compiled a 36-7 combined overall record. Brents has coached 24 All-Conference players and 16 All-Americans. He has had four players move on to the CFL, six players to the AFL and one player to the NFL during his esteemed coaching career.

Brents help build the Odessa Roughnecks (IFL) into a playoff caliber team in 2004. He returned to Odessa in 2005 as the offensive coordinator and he was a major part of a Roughnecks team that finished the regular season undefeated, and complete an overall record of 16-1. In 2006, Brents contributed in turning around the Lakeland Thunderbolts from a 6-9 team to a 13-3 divisional championship team.

The Generals are coming off a big 72-64 win over the San Angelo Stampede Express to cap off the 2009 regular season. The Generals await the winner of the first-round playoff match-up between the Abilene Ruff Riders and San Angelo Stampede Express on Saturday, July 18 in Abilene. El Paso will host the second-round playoff game from the El Paso County Coliseum on Sunday, July 26, 2009 at 4:00 p.m.
