Roughnecks Drop Black Gold Derby in Loss to OKC

The Tulsa Roughnecks FC fell victim to a bad goal late in the first half and a controversial goal early in the second half and eventually fell 3-0 to the Oklahoma City Energy Wednesday night at ONEOK Field. The result gave the Energy the victory in the 2018 Black Gold Derby Series with two wins in the three games between the state rivals.

The result was the first home loss for TRFC Head Coach Michael Nsien. The Roughnecks record moved to 1-2-2 after five games with the native Tulsan in charge.

The Roughnecks controlled play in the early minutes of the game and came close to opening the scoring on two occasions. In just the second minute, Michael Gamble made a move into the box and went down from a challenge from Atiba Harris, but Tulsa's appeals for a penalty kick were turned aside.

Just two minutes later, Gamble led Eti Tavares into open space, but his shot on the run was deflected into the side netting by OKC goalkeeper Cody Laurendi.

The Energy had a great opportunity in the 28th minute when Alex Dixon got free down the right side, but he fired wide of the post with on-rushing striker Adam Jahn alone in front of goal.

The Roughnecks threatened again in the 40th minute when Josh Morton's header on a corner kick from Joaquin Rivas forced a save from Laurendi.

The missed chances would come back to haunt Tulsa as the Energy broke through in the dying seconds of the first half on a mistake from TRFC goalkeeper Fabian Cerda. Cerda took a back pass and had several chances to clear the danger, but he continued to try to dribble out of trouble. He eventually lost the ball and left an easy finish for Jahn who slid his shot into the open net to give the Energy the gifted halftime lead.

The goal led to a change for the Roughnecks as Chase Gentry made his USL regular season debut to open the second half, replacing Cerda. The only other action this season for the rookie keeper came in Tulsa's US Open Cup loss to Wichita.

The Energy doubled their lead in controversial fashion in the 49th minute. Isaac Diaz went down in the box during a Roughnecks attack, but appeals for penalty were again denied. Off the play, Kyle Hyland delivered a long clearance that Christian Volesky appeared to tap forward with his hand. The Roughnecks backline held up anticipating a whistle that did not come, leaving Volesky another easy finish into an open net that gave Oklahoma City a 2-0 lead.

A difficult night for Tulsa continued in the 57th minute when a shot from Rivas was deflected wide by a defender. Rivas argued for a penalty kick, claiming the shot was deflected by a hand. The appeal led to a yellow card for Rivas and one for Nemanja Vukovic.

The frustrating night was capped when Morton took down Dixon in the penalty area in the 79th minute. On the penalty kick from Dixon, Gentry guessed correctly, but the shot bounced off the hands of the TRFC keeper and into the net to make it 3-0.

The Roughnecks will now turn their attention to the Colorado Springs Switchbacks who will be at ONEOK Field on Saturday, August 11 for TRFC's second match of the week. The Switchbacks recorded a 4-2 home win earlier this season in the first meeting between the two sides. It will be Roughnecks Poster Night with the first 1,000 fans receiving a full-color poster of this year's team. Kickoff in downtown Tulsa is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CDT.
