Calgary Roughnecks News Release
It took 8:11 longer than originally scheduled, but at the finish the Roughnecks sent the 12,028 in attendance home happy with a 15-14 overtime win over the Colorado Mammoth on Saturday night.
Looking for their first home win in since the home opener on January 13, the Roughnecks came out flying in the first quarter fighting for every loose ball like it was their last.
Calgary's effort paid off when Lewis Ratcliff popped home the game's first goal at 1:42 of the first quarter. Unfortunately for the home side, the Mammoth would put in four of their own after Ratcliff's goal and Calgary would only score once more to be down 4-2 at the end of one.
The bright spot in the first for the home side was Captain, Tracey Kelusky pummelling Colorado's, Jay Jalbert after Jalbert began taking liberties with Kelusky's teammates after a stoppage in play.
In the second quarter, a new chapter in Roughnecks history was started as rookie, Callum Crawford, seeing action in his first National Lacrosse League game, put home his first career goal on the power play at 3:31. Crawford was a regular on the offensive end during the game and made a key defensive play in transition in the third quarter.
The second quarter was equally unkind to the ânecks despite a solid beginning to the frame. After the Roughnecks scored the first two goals of the second, Colorado rattled off three of their own resulting in Calgary's starting goalie, Curtis Palidwor leaving the cage in favour of back-up, Andrew Leyshon.
In the third quarter, the Roughnecks found their horses on offense, kicking in six goals to Colorado's three to take a 10-10 tie into what they thought would be the final 15-minutes.
Despite the loss of Rob Kirbky in the fourth quarter to a second five-minute major penalty, Calgary dug deep and held a 14-13 lead for most of the fourth quarter. With an extra attacker, Colorado managed to slip the ball past Leyshon with five seconds left.
From the time he stepped between the pipes, Leyshon was solid, turning away 28 of the 35 shots he faced to record his first win of the 2006 campaign.
Overtime was heart stopping for the fans as each team had several chances to claim the victory early on. Finally, 8:11 into the extra frame with the shot clock approaching zero, Ratlciff closed the scoring with a beautiful solo effort to give send the crowd home happy.
Also scoring for the Roughnecks were co-game MVP, Jason Wulder (4G); co-game MVP, Grant Hamilton (2G, 1A); Kaleb Toth (2G, 4A); Ratcliff (2G, 4A) Kyle Goundrey (2G, 3A); Kevin Dostie (1G, 4A); Jeff Moleski (1G, 1A) and Crawford (1G).
The ânecks continue their season on the road next weekend on Friday in Edmonton and on Saturday in San Jose. The Roughnecks next home game is Saturday, April 1 against the San Jose Stealth at 7:30pm.
