Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today the signing of right-handed pitcher Coby Cowgill to a contract for the 2015 season.
Cowgill, 23, is a former farmhand of the Texas Rangers and San Diego Padres. In 22 games last season, including 14 starts, with Class A Fort Wayne and Class A-Advanced Lake Elsinore, he went 5-4 with a 6.90 ERA in the Padres system. His best season came in 2013 when he posted a 3-2 record and 2.80 ERA in 27 combined appearances with Class A Hickory in the Rangers system and Class A-Short Season Eugene in the Padres system.
"He's what we are looking for in terms of adding a young starter to our rotation," Forney said. "He has a powerful arm. His velocity is usually in that 91-92 MPH range. Sometimes it gets a little bit better than that. He shows signs of being a successful starter. We're going to put him in the rotation and see if he can man that fourth or fifth spot for us."
Cowgill was drafted by the Rangers in the 23 rd round of the 2012 MLB Amateur Draft out of the Virginia Military Institute. In his first two seasons of professional baseball, he had a 4-3 record and 2.90 ERA.
The Goldeyes now have 14 players signed for the 2015 season, including eight pitchers and six position players.
Season tickets and 9-Game Mini Packs for the 2015 season are now on sale. Fans can visit Goldeyes.com or call 982-BASE (2273) for more information.
